How Cricket Became a Billion Dollar Business in India
Cricket is more than just a sport in India. It is culture, emotion and... big money. What started as game for British officers has now become a full-fledged industry worth billions. Since 1983, when India won its first World Cup, everything has changed. TV rights, sponsorships, IPL franchises and giant contracts - it is now a huge business machine.
Thanks to economic liberalization in the 90s and the launch of the IPL in 2008, cricket has become attractive not only to fans but also to investors. Did you know that today a single match can gather an audience of more than a billion viewers?

What do you think about it - a sport for the soul or a business for the elite?
It’s amazing how quickly cricket has become a business in India. About 20 years ago, it was just a hobby, and now players are earning like movie stars. I work in marketing and I’ll tell you this: cricket is a gold mine. Every brand wants to be a part of the IPL. Even small companies are involved in sponsoring regional teams. This brings profit not only to the athletes but to entire sectors of the economy – from hotels to TV channels. I think cricket in India has become like Hollywood in sports form.
