Jin Chung, born and raised in South Korea, moved to the United States after graduating high school. While earning his degree in Communication Arts and Design at Virginia Commonwealth University, he won numerous awards and scholarships, including recognition from the Society of Illustrators and the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge. Following graduation, Jin worked as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer, notably collaborating with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jack Anderson on a syndicated editorial cartoon.
Despite a promising career in commercial illustration, Jin chose to pursue his true passion for fine art drawing and painting. After his apprenticeship under renowned portrait artist Danni Dawson, he soon began teaching classes alongside his mentor while showcasing his work in galleries and accepting private commissions. While Jin enjoys a wide range of subject matter—including landscapes and still lifes—he finds the human figure and portraiture to be his greatest inspirations, noting, “I am hopelessly drawn to the honest intimacy of one of us rendering one of us with an easel in between.”
Jin lives in Fairfax, VA, with his wife, who also teaches art to children. When he is not painting in his studio or teaching in the classroom, he is most likely out on the Eastern Shore of Maryland with his camera, looking to capture something beautiful.
