Thoughts - Lily Pacuit

The Friends of the Yellow Barn Studio are excited to present the 25th Annual High School Art Exhibition, an annual high school art competition we have sponsored for the past 24 years. This year the virtual, juried exhibition includes exceptional artwork by talented high school students from DMV area. Congratulations to the awardees! Every year forty outstanding works are juried into this show.

First Prize of $500, Second Prize of $250, and Third Prize of $150 are awarded to our judge’s top three picks. Plaza Gift Certificates of $25 are given to the 37 additional students whose works’ juried into this exhibit.

The Friends of the Yellow Barn Studio would like to express our “Thanks” to several very important people and groups without whom this show would not have been possible.

We sincerely thank The Friends membership and supporters whose dues and generous donations allow us to give back to our community for this very worthy event.

A big shout out to the High Schools in the DMV whose teachers motivated their students to produce works of art that were as unique as each one of them. The arts are alive and well in high school and we are pleased to announce that our schools who submitted more than doubled from a year ago!

This year’s 32 participating schools included;

Albert Einstein High School, Amir Kabir University, Basis DC, Bethesda Chevy Chase High School, Montgomery Bair High School, The Bullis School, Flint Hill School, Graham Drake Hill High School, Herndon High School, Holton Arms, Jackson-Reed High School, Walter Johnson High School, Landon, Magruder High School, McLean High School, Meridian High School, Middletown High School, Northwest High School, Poolesville High School, The Potomac School, Quince Orchard High School, Richard Montgomery High School, School Without Walls, Seneca Valley High School, Sherwood High School, Sidwell Friends School, South Lake High School,  Thomas S. Wootton High School, Walt Whitman High School, Washington Waldorf School and West Potomac High School , Yorktown High School,

We are very grateful to Vian Borchert, popular Yellow Barn Instructor, for her expertise and time to jury the forty competitive artworks from the 162 submissions. Vian is an established artist in the US and internationally, a graduate from the Corcoran School of Art and Design and an art critic.

Vian Borchert short bio could be found here.

And, we would like to express our gratitude to Jack Fuller who every year has donated the “Second Place” award in memory of his wife, Mitzi Yater Fuller, a Washington artist and teacher who was a devoted student of the Yellow Barn for many years. You can view her work on our Donation Page.

Lastly, we would like to thank Plaza Art for their continued support and dedication to The Friends!  Our events would not be the same without Plaza Art… Yay Plaza!!

 This year some of our student artists put their work up for sale. The artists are responsible for the sale and delivery of their works.

The Friends will put the artist in touch with a prospective buyer. Please contact us at info@friendsoftheyellowbarnstudio.org if there is interest.

Congrats to the young artists and many thanks to their teachers and families who supported this event!
